The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) says it will dispatch the country's largest humanitarian aid shipment to the famine-hit people of Somalia.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - IRCS Public Relations Director Pouya Hajian said on Saturday that the cargo, which weighs almost 5,000 tons and includes rice, flour, and legumes, would soon be sent to Somalia by sea from Iran's southern port of Bandar Abbas.

He noted “All Iranian provinces are supposed to send the collected public aid to Bandar Abbas.”

Hajian also explained that it takes almost two weeks to collect and package donations from different Iranian provinces.

IRCS has so far sent nine humanitarian aid convoys to Somalia as part of an initiative to supply Somalis battling with starvation and shortage of food.

Late in August, Somalia's Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali expressed gratitude to Iran for its humanitarian efforts to alleviate the sufferings of Somalis during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

The UN says 3.2 million Somalis are in need of immediate life-saving assistance.
